Your advertising dashboard is lying to you. Not through malice but through structural limitations in how it assigns credit for conversions. The default attribution model in most advertising platforms is last-click or last-touch, which assigns 100 percent of the conversion credit to the final ad interaction before the purchase. Moving Beyond Last Touch: Alternative Attribution Models

Incrementality Testing: The Gold Standard of Measurement
The most reliable method for measuring the true contribution of an advertising channel is incrementality testing, also called lift testing or holdout testing. The methodology is simple in concept: randomly divide your target audience into two groups, show ads to one group and withhold them from the other, and measure the difference in conversion rates between the two groups. The difference represents the incremental conversions generated by the advertising, conversions that would not have occurred without it.
Incrementality testing consistently reveals that upper-funnel channels contribute more to conversions than last-touch attribution suggests, and that lower-funnel channels contribute less. The operational challenge of incrementality testing is that it requires withholding ads from a portion of your audience, which means deliberately forgoing potential conversions during the test period. This cost is real but is an investment in measurement accuracy that pays for itself many times over through better budget allocation. Organizations that rely solely on platform-reported attribution are making allocation decisions based on distorted data. Organizations that validate with incrementality tests are making decisions based on causal evidence.
Building a Full-Funnel Measurement Framework
A full-funnel measurement framework combines multiple measurement methodologies to create a comprehensive picture of advertising effectiveness. Digital attribution provides real-time, campaign-level data for tactical optimization. Media mix modeling provides strategic-level estimates of channel contribution. Incrementality testing provides causal validation of both. No single methodology is sufficient. Each fills gaps in the others.
Implementing this framework requires organizational commitment to measurement as a strategic function, not just a reporting function. The measurement team must have the authority to design and run incrementality tests, the analytical capability to build and maintain media mix models, and the credibility to challenge budget allocation decisions that are based on misleading attribution data. Measurement is not a cost center. It is the infrastructure that ensures every dollar of advertising spend is allocated to its highest-return application.
Your ads are almost certainly working better than your dashboard says they are. The awareness campaigns, the social engagement, the display impressions, the video views that show zero conversions in last-touch reports are creating the demand that your search and retargeting campaigns subsequently capture. Full-funnel attribution does not just correct a measurement error. It reveals the true architecture of how advertising generates growth, and it provides the basis for investment decisions that reflect reality rather than the convenient fiction of last-click attribution.
