Beta Level

The probability of a Type II error — failing to detect a true effect. Power equals 1 minus beta.

What Is Beta Level?

Beta is alpha's neglected sibling. It is the probability that you miss a real effect. Conventionally beta = 0.20, meaning power = 0.80 and you catch 80% of true winners of the target size. Teams agonize over alpha and ignore beta, which is exactly why so many experimentation programs produce lots of "flat" results that are actually missed wins.

  • Publish beta alongside alpha in every test plan so stakeholders see both error rates.
